This resource is general information, not a diagnosis or a substitute for advice from a qualified professional who understands your circumstances.
The titles describe different training
Mental-health titles can be confusing, and the exact rules vary by country. A professional's training, registration and scope of work matter more than a title on its own.
A broad starting point
Psychologists commonly have university training in psychology and may provide assessment or talking therapy. Counsellors commonly focus on talking support for emotional and everyday difficulties. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health and can prescribe medication.
These descriptions are general. Always check the person's actual qualifications and what services they are able to provide where you live.
If you are still unsure
You can explain what you are looking for and ask whether the professional is an appropriate person to speak with. A responsible practitioner should be clear about their limits and refer you elsewhere when needed.
